Victory in Europe Day was on May 8, 1945, the date when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany and the end of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich.

Many readers of the Saugeen and Kincardine Times remember the day clearly.

The above picture was taken in Doncaster England by a newspaper photographer.  Ian Evans, Southampton resident was just turning 15 at the time and the happiness of the event was clearly depicted in the faces of all.  Ian's smile is just the same today.

He worked on a farm as a young lad that was in part worked by German and Italian prisoners of war and learned German as a result.  Later he came to Canada and worked on many interesting projects, not the least of which was the AVRO Arrow.

Ian is going to send a copy of the picture back to Doncaster to see how many faces can be recognized.  In the blow-up you can see so many details of clothes and the baskets they carried, the hats and the pram.  It's full of information.  Even with the ravages of war rationing, the people look fit and healthy.  How many obese people do you see?

Ian and his wife Joan are interested in many things with Ian having a thriving musical life both here and in the United States.  If you have not already recognized Ian, click here to see the cropped image of his happy face.  Also, note that is a bus in the background with the Peace sign  Be sure to blow this very clear picture up to see the details

There are probably many pictures of this type lurking in family albums.  Let's see them.  Send them to us.

Thank you for sending in this glorious picture Ian
