What's the advantage of using one of the Big Three?
How do you start?
You can read all about Export/Import on one of the Big Three help tutorials. You can transition from the old to the new by getting the Big Three to grab all your incoming emails from your old provider. This can go on forever or until the old provider goes away, but you should send out a broadcast message to your address book telling all about your new address. |
Once you get on one of the Big Three, start thinking
about organization of the information.
Gmail is different than Yahoo or Hotmail in that it uses labels rather than folders to store messages. That is, you can tag or label a saved message with something like 'To do items' Their advice is to archive everything useful and rely on the excellent Google search facility to find old information. Gmail recently invoked the very high quality HTTPS encryption for all email traffic to and from their servers. This allows you to send email safely on an unprotected wireless network. Unprotected is the norm for cafes, motels and other public places that offer wireless. You'll find your new email experience different at first, but hang in there, because it's the best long term for you. Microsoft is putting nothing into Outlook Express and all their mail efforts into Hotmail. You'll find in the future that email will merge with video chatting and phone service. Don't get left behind!
