Mens’ Opening Day
Chippewa Golf and Country Club officially opened for competitive golf on Saturday, May 1 with its four-man Texas Scramble format. More than 40 players turned out for this fun event and although the weather was troublesome, with wind and intermittent rain, everyone managed to get their rounds in and some good scores were turned in. After nine holes, the Gerry Call team had a one stroke lead, carding a 6-under par 29, but the Stu MacLean and Rob Beitz teams were only one stroke back, both teams with scores of 30. Within striking range at 31 after nine holes were the teams captained by Brian Acton and Dale Woods. Going into the back nine, the Call team maintained its lead with a birdie on the tenth and fourteenth holes, but out of nowhere came the Bruce Towner team with birdies on ten, eleven, fourteen and fifteen to move within one stroke of the Call group. The Beitz team kept pace with birdies on eleven and fourteen, and coming into the final hole, Call held a two-stroke lead over Beitz and a three-stroke lead over Towner, who had bogied the sixteenth hole. It was too little, too late for Beitz and Towner, who both managed a birdie on the eighteenth hole to Call’s par.
