Saugeen Shores may soon have another taxi service ... but one that is very unique.

Robert A. Byrne applied to council on Monday for a taxi license to operate four power-assisted 'bicycle type' vehicles that would initially run in Port Elgin from sunrise to sunset, weather permitting.

Byrne, an experienced taxi driver said that he feels there is a need for an environmentally sound but quiet means of taxi service.

The vehicles proposed are the SJ-T02 model where the driver sits up front on a bicycle seat and two passengers sit in the back.  The vehicle resembles a modern type of rick-sha method of transportation

Made in China, the vehicles are widely used throughout Asian countries as a method of short-distance transportation and have only recently begun to be considered in North America.

All standards under the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) and local Police Services' requirements will also have to be met.

The recommendation to proceed with allowing the licensing to go ahead was approved at Town Council meeting on Monday.

"I fully applaud this initiative," says Councilor Victoria Serda.  "This is just another step toward an environmental, eco-transportation system that is good for the climate."
