Bear sightings in Saugeen Shores

Saugeen Shores Police Service has several reports of bear sightings in the areas of Blanchfield Drive and Tyendinaga Street in Southampton. The bear was last seen in the area of Ottawa Street and Bruce Road 13.

At one of the locations the bear was eating from a bird feeder.  There have been no reports of any immediate danger to the public.

To report an immediate danger, residents can call 911 or police dispatch at 519-832-2500.  Saugeen Shores Police will respond to immediate threats.  Nuisance bear problems can be reported to the Ministry of Natural Resources at 1-866-514-2327 (bear).

The public are reminded of the following tips:

1.     Bears eat berries and fish but are attracted to human food.

2.     Keep yards clean, don’t leave food out, including pet food.

3.     Don’t feed bears, they quickly become used to it and will return.

4.     Keep the BBQ clean.

5.     Don’t put garbage out the night before collection.
