Editor,
I'm sure that the persons robbing Vincent Jewellers had a pretty good
idea of where the police "weren't". I am also sure that if a police
patrols were present in Southampton, it would introduce a wild card into
the robbers plans, as they wouldn't (read shouldn't) know where they
might turn up. If an audible or silent alarm is generated it's a lot
better to be in Southampton rather than Port Elgin. We do have over 20
persons on the Police Department, it doesn't seem to be too much to ask
to be guaranteed a police presence in Southampton. In fact I believe
that at the time of the creation of the joint police force, certain
assurances were given stating that there would be a continuous police
presence in Southampton.
Citizens can do a lot by protecting their own community, by observing
and promptly reporting; but for the cost we pay, we should be entitled
to a more even dispersement of our law enforcement resources.
Do I think my opinion will change anything? No. At best it will probably
cause the Chief of Police to issue a letter defending his practices,
which to my mind are in need of improvement.
Yours truly,
Ron Vanderburgh (Saugeen Shores property owner)
