It appears that the 'pay as you go' waste program in Saugeen Shores is a success. Only two years into the 'bag tag' program at $1.50 per bag and landfill diversion in Saugeen Shores has gone from 35 per cent to 58 per cent, According to Bill Jones, Director of Public Works, the result has been amazing with waste reduction resulting in an increased life expectancy of the landfill site from 13 years to 16.5 years. Saugeen Shores waste is also well under the average per person in the province. Mayor Mike Smith, who is also Bruce County Warden, added that the County is looking at best practices and that Saugeen Shores is setting an example when it comes to waste management.
