Full-day junior and senior kindergarten in Ontario and, therefore, in Bruce County is going ahead in September. Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) will have 130 students in five classes - four at Sydenham Community School in Owen Sound and one at Hillcrest Central School in Teeswater, which represents five per cent (5%) of the kindergarten enrolment. Also included in the initiative are the following schools:
Overall, there will be a total of 312 students in 12 classes that will represent 15% of the kindergarten Bluewater enrolment. It is anticipated that teachers and early childhood educators will work in partnership to help four and five-year-olds learn during the regular school day. By September, 2015, all children enrolled in kindergarten programs in Ontario will attend school on a full-time basis. Full-day kindergarten is an important part of the government’s Open Ontario Plan. It is expected to provide children with a strong foundation for future learning, so they can go on to post-secondary education and get a good job. Full-day kindergarten and seamless before-and after-school programs also help busy parents save time and money.
