Clients of Community Living of Kincardine and District are going to go to work for the municipality.

In committee-of-the-whole Wednesday night (June 9), clerk Donna MacDougall explained a community outreach initiative which would match the Community Living clients with a municipal department where they could work for a few hours.

Each senior manager would identify the number of individuals for his/her department and the clerk's department and Community Living would finalize the balance of the arrangements.

MacDougall said the agency promotes and facilitates the full participation and inclusion of people who have a developmental disability, to lead enriched and meaningful lives. It believes in quality of life, respect and dignity, and working collaboratively.

The goal of Community Living Ontario is that all people live in a state of dignity, share in all elements of living in the community, and have the opportunity to participate effectively.

There would be no compensation paid to the individuals, said MacDougall, and Community Living would provide transportation for the clients. There would also be a Community Living support person at any facility where the clients are volunteering.

Deputy mayor Laura Haight asked how the clients are covered as far as workers' insurance is concerned.

"They are covered the same way our own volunteers are covered through municipal liability insurance," said MacDougall.

Council agreed with the proposal. Final approval is to come forward at the June 16 meeting.
