Kincardine is putting $100,000 toward a medical school graduate who has agreed to practise emergency room medicine at the Kincardine hospital.

At the meeting Wednesday night (June 2), council approved an agreement with Michael James Ballantine to help fund him through his final year of medical school at the University of Western Ontario Shulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, and his residency which will include a year of emergency medicine.

Ballantine will receive $20,000 per year, from 2011-2015, inclusive, with the expectation that he will come to Kincardine and establish himself as a full-time emergency department physician at the hospital.

He is expected to begin no later than September, 2014, and will have a minimum of 13 shifts, equally distributed between night and day shifts. He will maintain that position for a minimum period of five years.
