Physical education students at Kincardine District Secondary School were climbing the walls - literally - on Tuesday (May 25). The Guelph Grotto brought its rock-climbing walls and instructors to KDSS, to teach students how to safely enjoy the sport. The walls will be set up at the school for the rest of this week. Instructor Michelle Flanagan showed the teens how to properly hook up to the ropes on the wall, and how to operate the belay device to assist other climbers safely up and down the climbing wall. The major things to remember, she said, is make sure the ropes are tight at all times, and don't let go of the brake rope when belaying the climber back to the ground. Working in pairs, the students put on harnesses and helmets and took turns climbing the wall. Later in the week, the instructors will be teaching more advanced rock-climbing techniques and doing more difficult drills with the students.
