Based on water samples taken by Grey Bruce Health Unit, Sauble Beach in South Bruce Peninsula on June 25, 2010, the entire beach was posted as unsafe for swimming when bacteria levels were deemed at an unacceptable level.

Additional or augmented testing was also done at the beach near the Saugeen River mouth after heavy rains and winds created turbidity.  "Surprisingly," says Andrew Barton, Manager of Health Protection for Grey Bruce Health, "the water quality along Southampton Beach remains quite good despite the turbidity and appearance of the brown water.

Water samples taken Monday and again Wednesday, June 30th in Sauble Beach showed that acceptable levels, according to Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards, had been reached and as of today, July 2, 2010, the beach at Sauble has once again been approved for bathers.

While Sauble may now be safe for swimmers, three more beaches were posted today, July 2, as unsafe for bathing:

  • Station Park Beach, Kincardine

  • Durham Conservation Area (Middle Dame Beach in the Township of West Grey

  • Bayshore Beach (J.R. Irvine Playground) in Owen Sound

Beach water samplings at the three beaches exceeded levels set by the Ministry and the postings will remain until water quality improves.

According to Barton, the safest procedure for bathers is to not swim after an especially heavy rainfall or if the water appears turbid (brown).  He also advises against swimming where there are signs posted as the water is considered a health risk.
