Dear Mr. Jones,

I would like to express my frustration at the apparent lack of service provided by the Municipality of Saugeen Shores. I purchased a ping pong table and a desk which were both packaged in a large cardboard box and numerous Styrofoam blocks. The town is suppose to be a growing retirement community but this experience has me totally perplexed.

I have tried to get the recycling truck to pick up the Styrofoam with no luck. Today I put it all in a garbage a single can with a garbage sticker only to have it left at the curb by your staff. Upon calling the office I was told that I need to personally take this to the Southampton landfill.

In discussing this with retired neighbours I was told that I simply need to put three or four blocks out at a time in with my garbage and that over the next month I will be able to get rid of the entire can. Apparently they all do this with cardboard as many of the retirees do not drive.

I realize that this is a small community with limited resources however this seems like an easy fundamental basic service to offer and less expensive than bike paths and north shore sewers.

It is my understanding that other local municipalities want garbage to be placed in clear plastic bags so that this practice can be stopped. If one does not own a truck/van how does Saugeen Shores expect people to dispose of this type of waste without curb-side pick-up? Can one hire a private disposal firm and submit the bill for credit against my taxes?

Hello Mr. Wolf

I want to start by apologizing for the inconvenience you have experienced. Although Saugeen Shores is a progressive municipality we are still a relatively small municipality and curbside collection of additional products like Styrofoam are cost prohibitive at this time. Some of the larger urban centres in Ontario can provide additional curbside recycling services such as Styrofoam due to economies of scale. However, that being said, we are one of only a handful of smaller municipalities in Ontario that offer any kind of Styrofoam recycling at no cost to the residents of Saugeen Shores. Styrofoam can be taken free of charge to the recycling depot located at 126 Concession 14 just east of Southampton.

I thank you for letting me address your concerns and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kindest Regards,

Bill Jones
Director of Public Works
