Students participate in summer business program |

PORT ELGIN – The Saugeen Shores Business Enterprise Centre is pleased to announce that three students from Bruce County will be participating in this year’s Summer Company program. Summer Company is a unique program which provides students with an opportunity to successfully start and manage their own summer business, within a positive and supportive environment. On Friday, July 2, 2010 at 11 a.m., the Saugeen Shores Business Enterprise Centre is hosting the launch of the 2010 Summer Company program. Coming to help kick of the launch is MPP for Huron-Bruce, Carol Mitchell. Mitchell will be presenting the Summer Company cheque, in the amount of $4,500, to this year’s participants. The money is to help the students with the start-up cost of their businesses. Refreshments will be served. The launch will be held at the Saugeen Shores Business Enterprise Centre’s office, which is located at 559 Goderich Street, Port Elgin. The launch provides an excellent opportunity for the students to meet and socialize with the SSBEC staff, community mentors, the SSBEC Advisory and with MPP Carol Mitchell. The three students, who will be participating in Summer Company 2010, will be starting the following business ventures: Nichole Barnard of Mildmay, Independent Training and Coaching James Lindsay of Southampton, Funky Phresh Beats Shawn MacEachern of Kincardine, Lake Huron Cottage Maintenance The Summer Company program gives these students, and hundreds across the province, the chance to run their own business with limited risk and the potential to earn and learn more than they would at another summer job. Local business people volunteer to act as mentors to the students, sharing the benefits of their experience with the students in both group situations and one-on-one. Students between the ages of 15 and 29 are qualified to apply, and must be currently a student and returning to school in the fall of 2010 - Students can receive up to $1,500 at the start, and up to an additional $1,500 on successful completion of the program- Students receive a minimum of 12 hours of hands-on business training from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade program providers, plus a mentor to offer advice on running the business- According to a 2008 survey, 22% of the businesses started by students through Summer Company are still runningSummer Company is coordinated and delivered through Ontario’s network of 57 Small Business Enterprise Centres (SBECs) and five non-profit organizations across the province for the provincial Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.
