The ever-outspoken local  MPP Bill Murdoch announced today in Owen Sound his intentions to retire from politics in October 2011.

Known as a 'maverick' , Murdoch has decided that, after 33 years in public office, including 21 years as an MPP and 12 years on municipal council, he is ready to hang up his hat and let others step up to the plate.

“It’s time to move on. I want to give the candidates a chance to establish their name in the community and get organized for the next general election,” said Murdoch, adding he will not be endorsing any candidates at this time.

He said he would however, stay active in the community after his retirement.

“I’ll still have my farm to run, I’ll still belong to the local service clubs, and I’ll still be outspoken. I just won’t be going to Queen’s Park anymore,” he said.

Murdoch was first elected in 1990. He has served under all three political stripes, including Bob Rae’s NDP, Mike Harris’ Conservatives and Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals.

He has also sat as the Ontario Legislature’s only independent member in 2008-09.

“What’s made it worthwhile for me was always the small things. It’s always been about the positive feedback and the ‘thank-yous’ I hear when I’m out and about,” Murdoch said. “It’s these little things that have made my job that much more enjoyable over the last 20 years.”
