The final blank window at the Anglican Church of the Messiah in Kincardine is now a gorgeous stained glass window, thanks to Cathy and Doug Mallory of Kincardine. They commissioned the work through the SeeView Gallery and artist Margriet Van Erp of Kincardine, and the Mallorys' granddaughter, Michaela Telfer of Austin, Texas, designed the window. Based on the Biblical story of the shepherds following the star to Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus, the window is a marvellous and colourful creation. "We wanted to do it in memory of my parents, Jim and Marg Salmon of Toronto, my husband's parents, Dick and Betty Mallory of the United States, and our son, David, who died of cancer at the age of 34," says Cathy Mallory. She says they chose the story of the shepherds because they walked through the church and viewed all the windows. Each tells a story from the Bible, but this story had not been done, she says. Their eldest granddaughter, Michaela, who was 18 at the time, is a talented artist. She has just completed a year in an Honours Art program at the University of Texas, and is planning to study in Prague for a semester.
"Michaela met with Margriet (Van Erp) and was fascinated by the work she had done," says Cathy. "Within 45 minutes, Michaela had the outline done of the drawing and then she coloured it in. Margriet took it from there and we are so thrilled that she stuck so closely to the design." The drawing was approved by the Bishop of the Diocese before any work was done, adds Cathy. The window will be dedicated on Sunday, July 18, in co-ordination with the Mallorys' 50th wedding anniversary.
