The Spruce the Bruce program is alive and well in Huron-Kinloss. This new initiative was started by Bruce County and is one of the first regional programs in downtown revitalization in the province. It will see an infusion of cash and resources into enhancing, promoting and maintaining the traditional commercial cores and creating a destination that people want to visit whether it’s for shopping, walking, or catching up on what’s happening in the community. At the township's July general committee meeting, administrator Mary Rose Walden told council that surveys have been distributed to businesses, and cameras have been distributed to residents. A survey is also being mailed out to all resident households. Its purpose is to help determine what local residents’ shopping habits are, why people are going to downtown, what would make them shop there more often, and what positive images can be promoted and/or developed to help support downtown. The survey is also available on-line at www.explorethebruce.com/sprucethebruce. Meanwhile, the Spruce the Bruce Team is hosting workshops in Ripley and Lucknow as part of the development of the Community Design Toolkit, said Walden. “We’ve armed people with disposable cameras to capture the essence of what their community means to them,” said Spruce the Bruce co-ordinator, Kara Van Myall. “We’re hoping residents come out to the workshops and tell us what makes their community unique, why they love to live here, and what would make it even better.”
