An upcoming training exercise in Bruce County will put the skills of local fire, ambulance and police personnel to the test. It will also serve as a learning experience for 30 area high school students enrolled in the fifth annual Bruce Grey MedQUEST Health Careers Exploration Program in Walkerton.

A mock disaster will be held at the Walkerton Fire Hall (510 Napier St.) and the adjacent Sacred Heart High School parking lot on Wednesday, July 14, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The Walkerton Fire Department will respond to the exercise, along with Bruce County Emergency Medical Service and the South Bruce OPP.

The emergency responders won’t be briefed on the scenario until they are called to the scene, giving the MedQUEST participants a first-hand look at how the various services interact and work together when responding to an emergency.

The mock disaster will occupy a half-day for the MedQUEST participants, who will each play an integral role in the simulated emergency, either as victims with various injuries or by working alongside the professional responders.

MedQUEST is a week-long, medical-based summer program for high school students interested in pursuing a career in health care. The program runs from July 12-16, 2010, with most sessions taking place at Walkerton District Secondary School.
