Bette McLeod chalked up a few more miles last week. On Monday, she toured over to Lucknow with Liz Large; on Tuesday, she attended the Purple Grove Bible Study Group at the home of Marilyn Reid and took in the Bervie United Church Garden Party in the evening; she enjoyed the Ripley Horticultural Society garden tour on Wednesday; and on Thursday, had lunch and a bit of a gravel run with Carol and Glen Cowan of Lucknow. Friday and Saturday? Well, she says she rested! On Sunday, Don and Marilyn Reid packed her, her chair and her cushion in the car and took her, by surprise, to attend the services at the Kinlough Presbyterian Church where old friend Alex McCombie was preaching. Alex further heightened Bette’s delight in the day by singing “Balm of Gilead” especially for her.

Many neighbours, friends and family gathered at the home of Dave Stewart on Saturday evening to honour Dave and Phyllis' son, Steve. Newlyweds Steve and Lacy are here from Medicine Hat, Alberta. Congratulations and warmest wishes were sent their way from the folks here “at home.”

Judy Thompson and Rob and Jen Thompson attended the gathering of the Dwyer clan at her cousin’s Farm Vacation rental site near Douglas, Ontario, over the long weekend. As with most Irish get-togethers there were plenty of fiddles, step-dancing, stories and laughs.

Good luck to Jennifer Thompson who is launching her own line of personalized skin care products. I've seen the results of the trials and I think I will be the first in line to buy. Wonder if she is going to sell it in a 45-gallon barrel? Then I can just dip the whole body in! Her aim is produce a product that is organic, works and is affordable. For a consultation, Jen can be reached at All About Hair, Face and Body in Ripley.

Happy birthday to Kira Thompson who turned one year old on July 24. Kira is the daughter of Jon Thompson and Jody DeLeon. She is the first grandchild of Marg Thompson of Kincardine and Don Thompson of Purple Grove.

Thanks to the township guys for filling the raw edge of our new pavement with gravel. I had visions of a hay wagon or loaded grain buggy catching that edge (in some places eight or nine inches deep) and overturning. Not to mention the chuck it gave me the other day when I walked off it. Should have been a little less interested in what was in the mail and a little more interested in watching where I was going!

Last Saturday, 80 descendants of the Herb and Ada Farrell family gathered at the summer home of Rob and Carolyn Farrell for a 1 p.m. potluck picnic. All of Jack and Janet Farrell's family was in attendance. As always, the variety and volume of food and treats was well appreciated. Rob and cousins Rick Zieba, Wilf Gamble, Bob Arbuckle and others had set up some shelters in case of rain and as everyone gathered under the shelters and another tarp, all got to know their relatives a little better while the little ones played in the rain. Deanne Zieba won the gumball contest and five teams of cousins went on a Treasure Hunt through the woods and over to Aunt Kay, Aunt Ethel and Uncle Ron's in search of the way to the treasure. It was great to meet some recent additions to family and also some who had not been home for some time. Welcome to Patrick and Misty Emmerton and Patrick Jr. and Katie.
