The sixth Doors Open Kincardine will feature almost 30 sites as the event showcases Kincardine's heritage Oct. 16-17. New to the tour is the Bervie Women's Institute (WI) Hall, located on Highway 9 in the Hamlet of Bervie, east of Kincardine. ![]() Bervie WI Hall The Bervie WI was founded in 1907. It was, and is, an important educational and lobby group concerned with the health and welfare of rural women and children everywhere. In 1960, the Bervie WI purchased the Orange Hall and renovated it. The women saved an historic building and have a place to preserve their important records, such as the Tweedsmuir Books, and continue their education and supportive projects in Canada and abroad. For more information, check the website at www.brucecountydistrictwomensinstitute.com During the Doors Open tour, the Bervie WI will be holding a bake sale and display of quilts and archival material. Another new site is the Kincardine Municipal Administrative Centre, located on the 5th Concession of the former Kincardine Township. ![]() Kincardine Municipal Administrative Centre Built by the Canadian Agra Corporation in the early 1990s as an office, this building was acquired by the municipality around 2001, after amalgamation. It is an excellent example of adaptive re-use - commercial office space converted to municipal administrative offices and a council chamber. The location is idyllic, with 360-degree views over fields and to the west, Lake Huron. The public is welcome to see where the action takes place, politically, in the Municipality of Kincardine. There will also be a public unveiling and viewing of the 1855 Planning Map and eight George Conley drawings in the council chamber on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 17, from 1-3 p.m. Also new to the event are three cemeteries in the Municipality of Kincardine: Tiverton, Port Bruce and Kincardine. The Tiverton Cemetery, located in the Village of Tiverton, was laid out about 1850, and is still active. The list of names is a roster of early settlers of the Tiverton and district, whose descendants are still living in the area. |
Tiverton Cemetery It is here that the grandparents of two Canadian prime ministers, John Diefenbaker and Joe Clark, rest. One large monument was erected with the funds acquired during the Klondike Gold Rush. It is a beautiful, restful and peaceful site surrounded by mature trees. The Port Bruce Cemetery, located on the 6th Concession of the former Bruce Township, just east of Sideroad B/C, was founded about 1860. With a spectacular location on a hill surrounded by trees, the cemetery is all that is left of the Port Bruce community situated on the shore of Baie du Dore to the west. Port Bruce and another community on the Baie, Malta, burned to the ground on July 4, 1862, leaving one house standing, The communities were never rebuilt, but the cemetery survives, featuring many interesting grave-markers of early settlers. It is still an active cemetery. The Kincardine Cemetery, located at the south end of the former Town of Kincardine where Queen Street ends was laid out in the original survey of 1847-48. It was laid out by Allan Park Brough (provincial land surveyor) in 1847 along with the layout for the "town plot" when this part of the Queen's Bush was surveyed before it was opened up to settlement. The first settlers arrived in 1848, and many of them and their descendants are buried here. The Malcolm Mausoleum is the most grand. Sir Alexander Mackenzie of Brascan, Dr. Solomon Secord, John Scougall, and other notables are all interred here. It is a beautiful, restful location with mature trees. Besides these new sites, there are many familiar places of interest on the Doors Open tour, including the Walker House, the Doll House on Huron Terrace, Knox Presbyterian Church, the Lime Kiln Resort in Inverhuron, Malcolm Place, the Kincardine Legion, and more. Jane Rigby of the organizing committee, says the actual tour guide booklets should be printed by the end of August, and will be available at the Kincardine tourist booth, myFM Radio office and at the municipal office.
