August 12 at approximately 2pm I noticed a small inflatable boat coming towards the island. As it got closer I realized that the boat was more of a toy and there was an adult and a child on board. They had no paddles but the woman was leaning over the front and paddling with her arms, the child was behind her. I asked the child's age and she said it was her 6 year old nephew. There was no paddles or safety equipment with them. She assured me she was able to paddle back to the island and that she was watching out for power boats although I don't know what she would have done if one approached them at high speed. I asked if she was confident of her nephew's ablility to get back to shore if this inflatable plastic boat deflated. She said she wasn't sure but was returning anyway. Like many who think the island is a good destination not a lot of thought goes into the adventure, no thought for safety at least. I watched them for 40 minutes and they did reach the shore but it wouldn't have taken much for this to turn into another summer tragedy.
