Slowing Down

New Perspectives

There's nothing like some warm weather to slow us down, at least for a bit.  Sure, there are those of us who continue to be running, running around, running errands or other ways that keep us moving in the heat.  Summer is to be active and engaged, busy doing things.  I can't just sit around all day!  That seems to be the way it is with some of us.

Others of us need to slow down, move less, go down to the beach and drink lemonade (or other beverages).  The heat runs into us like a brick wall and we have to stop and sit, turn on the fan and maybe lay down for a nap after lunch.

Sometimes the summer becomes a time for reflection.  Whether we are moving or feel immobile, these months can give us pause.

So what do I do with this pause?  How do you and I receive this break in routine?  I am tempted sometimes to fill it with other things to keep me occupied and engaged.  In wiser moments, these pauses give me time to reflect.  It may be while I am running or the moment may arrive when sitting on our front porch at night.

Much of life will tell us to produce or consume if we are going to be worth anything.  Prove it to me.  Show me what you've got.  I won't believe it 'till I see it

What happens when we are not producing or consuming?  Do our lives still matter?

I believe that our deepest identity is found in how we rest and relax.  Who we are is revealed when we are not working or buying something.  Life is a gift.  Let's unwrap it.  Take your time.  Good things reveal themselves over time, even in the heat of summer.
