The Town of Saugeen Shores was successful with obtaining funding required to construct the nearly completed trail along Northshore Road.
The funding received from the Building Canada Fund, Communities Component, through the Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure, has allowed for the construction of over 5 km's of asphalted trail along Northshore Road. This new 2.5 meter wide trail stretching from North Shore Park in Port Elgin to South Street in Southampton will provide a safe mode of transportation for cyclists, joggers, skateboarders, roller bladders, caregivers with strollers, walkers and scooters. The Department of Community Services will be erecting signs in the next week that indicate which users are permitted on the trail along with safety signs to try to ensure users are kept safe at all times. Signs will also indicate distances to the next intersection or points of interest. This trail will be a destination for users who travel to Saugeen Shores for a trail experience and will also assist individuals requiring a safe mode for active transportation. This new trail has caused excitement within the community and beyond and the Department of Community Services would like to include the community in selecting a name for the new trail and is opening it up to accept suggestions. A competition is now commencing to help name the park. A Selection Committee comprised of municipal staff personnel, members from the Parks and Trails Advisory Committee & Saugeen Rail Trail Association, will decide on the final name and then presented to Council for final consideration and approval.
