South Bruce Beach has been swallowed up by Lurgan Beach and the cottagers are not happy about it.

They came to Huron-Kinloss council at the general committee meeting Wednesday night (Aug. 4), asking that the proper beach name be restored.

Nan Grant, representing the South Bruce Beach Cottage Association Inc., said the section of lakefront from just south of the 6th Concession in the former Huron Township to 110 Gordon St. N. has been historically and geographically known as South Bruce Beach.

However, three years ago, council approved beach name changes so that the section of lakefront from Pine River north to the 6th Concession became Lurgan Beach, and the section from the 6th north to the 10th became Bruce Beach.

The cottagers did not become aware of the change until they saw signs that were posted this year, said Grant.

"We saw a sign at the foot of the 6th, saying that was Lurgan Beach and we knew something was wrong," she said. "That area has been South Bruce Beach since 1935."

She noted that South Bruce Beach residents Pearl and Elizabeth Henderson donated property for a park that was named after them in South Bruce Beach - that area is now called Lurgan Beach.

"Hill Street (which is south of Gordon Street) is the start of Lurgan Beach," said Grant.

"I'm asking, on behalf of the South Bruce Beach Cottage Association, that the township revert the names back to their original designation and make South Bruce Beach the area south of the 6th to 110 Gordon St. N., and that the signs be changed as well," she said.

Councillor Anne Eadie said she remembers that area well. "That was my beach when I was growing up," she said. "Lurgan Beach did, in fact, start at the 4th, not the 6th."

Council agreed to have staff review the situation and bring a report back for consideration.
