The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit was brought in yesterday (Aug. 17) to help the South Bruce OPP search for a missing swimmer at Station Beach, Kincardine.

Constable Kevin Martin, community services officer, reports that Station Beach has been closed to the public while the search team is in place. He urges people to respect the closure and avoid the incident area.

A 16-year-old girl went missing Monday afternoon (Aug. 16). South Bruce OPP received the 911 call at 2:17 p.m. Two swimmers were pulled out of Lake Huron at Station Beach but another swimmer had not returned to shore.

The police, Kincardine Fire Department, Bruce County Ambulance and the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary responded to the call.

Martin says that the high winds from the on-shore breeze and waves cresting at more than two metres contributed to a very strong undertow and murky water making search and rescue conditions complex.

The fire department sent rescuers out into the water. The OPP Marine Unit and the Coast Guard Auxiliary committed their boats to the search and were hampered by the turbulent surf which limited visibility for rescuers.

The OPP helicopter arrived to join the search, but its efforts were also hampered by visibility issues in the water.

The search for the missing swimmer continues.
