The Kincardine Relay for Life was a huge success.

The fifth annual event was held from Friday at 7 p.m. through to 7 a.m. Saturday at the Davidson Centre track.

Chairperson Pat Holder said almost $66,300 was raised as of Saturday morning, with more donations coming in on-line.

"The committee did a great job in organizing this year's event," she said. "Our total raised over the five years is $471,418.58."

There were 247 participants on 27 teams this year. "Our thanks to everyone who took part and to our hard-working volunteers who helped put this event together," said Holder. "Without their endless energy and excitement, the Relay for Life would not have been as successful."

She also thanked the great entertainers who volunteered their time and talents throughout the evening.

"A huge thank you to all the participants, the survivors and their families for coming together to honour our community members who have been touched by cancer and for taking the time to help make cancer history," said Holder. "I am very proud to have been given the opportunity to chair the event, as well as participate with my own team."

She said the numbers were down a bit from last year when $80,000 was raised for the fight against cancer.

Many teams joined in the event in honour of, or in memory of, those who have battled cancer.

The "Miles 4 Laurie" group walked in memory of team member Shannon Robinson's mother, Laurie Daniel, who died of cancer this past year.

The "Never Too Late" team was participating in memory of Bill Windsor, Ann's husband, who died Aug. 30, 2009, two weeks after last year's Relay for Life.

The teams were full of energy Friday night, but were a lot quieter as Saturday morning rolled around and they enjoyed breakfast before packing up their gear to head home.

The weather was warm and dry and that was a huge plus for this year's event.
