Clara Geddes of Kincardine and her son, Sam, wife, Angie, and their family of London have been overwhelmed by the kindness and support shown by the Kincardine community for their son and grandson, Jacob. The four-year-old has a chromosome disorder, needs to be g-tube fed, has braces on his legs and requires a special wheelchair so he can start school in September. The family has received some government funding through the Assistive Devices Program, but needs another $1,300 to buy the specialized equipment. At the Massed Band event on Saturday, Clara and her colleagues at the Kincardine hospital sold ice cream bars to help raise the remaining money needed for Jacob's wheelchair. The little boy was born with a hole in his heart, says his father. "About a month after he was born, we noticed he was lethargic and had lost all energy to feed. Then he started turning blue so my wife took him to the emergency room. He was admitted and listed in critical condition." The following month, he was stabilized and transferred to Toronto for heart surgery.

Then doctors discovered he had a very rare chromosome disorder which brought a host of other physical problems, says his father.
However, Jacob is bright and alert and, with the special wheelchair, he can join other children his age for his first day of school. If you would like to support this worthy cause, donations are being accepted at the X-ray department at the Kincardine hospital, E-mail Catherine Elmes at celmes@sbghc.on.ca, or send donations to Clara Geddes at 357 Elgin St., Kincardine, Ontario, N2Z 2B7.
