The Summer Student Program for young want-to-be entrepreneurs ended Wednesday. The program allows young people, the opportunity to start up a business after completing and submitting their ideas to the Small Business Centre. Each student was required to attend 40 hours of regular business operation courses to learn how to professionally operate a small independent business and the program was mentored by local business people in the community. Nichole Barnard of Mildmay established an independent equestrian training and coaching environment in Mildmay, James Lindsay's undertook to provide music production services targeted to teens from 15 - 19 within a two-hour travel radius from his studio in Southampton at an affordable cost and Shawn MacEachern [of Kincardine] provided property maintenance and services required by summer residents or seniors in the cottage area. Each of the students said it was a very worthwhile experience and that they "learned a lot". All agreed that the one thing that would be beneficial would be to have more time in order to advertise and to have the computer program offered by the government improved. "The program is offered to young people between the ages of 15 and 29," says Ginny Henry. "It teaches them how to start a business, how to develop a business plan and how to carry out a small business enterprise." Anyone interested for next summer can contact the Small Business Centre at 519-832-2082.
