The second annual Relay For Life in Saugeen Shores was held July 9-10 and the local volunteer committee together with the  Canadian Cancer Society (Bluewater Unit) are extremely pleased with the results again this year.

Relay for Life is the Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser and it’s unique in that it’s a 12-hour overnight event --- symbolizing that cancer doesn’t sleep. Relay is a celebration of survival, a tribute to the lives of loved ones, and a night of fun, friendship, and fundraising to beat cancer.

This year, 550 registered participants made up 49 teams. There were 103 registered cancer survivors who opened Relay with the Survivors Victory Lap. 1300 luminaries were lit at dusk all which were bought in memory or honour of a loved one touched by the disease. More than 200 volunteers lent a hand and dozens of local businesses contributed to the cause. With fundraising open for a number of weeks following the event, it brought the total raised at the Saugeen Shores event this year to $167,404 bringing the two year total to more than $334,000.

Rona Cobean, Nancy MacLeod and Trish Bernard served as co-chairs for the event. They are proud of the success and share the achievement with the organizing committee, volunteers, and all the participants that took part. “A huge thank you to everyone in the community including those that walked, pledged a team member, donated a prize or sponsored a portion of the program …everyone’s help made it memorable and successful. We couldn’t have done it without all of you,” comments Rona Cobean.

“Money raised at Relay helps the Canadian Cancer Society to fund some of the most promising research, implement local services such as transportation and peer support programs as well as advocacy initiatives,” explains Brenda O’Neill, Fundraising Coordinator with the Bluewater Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society in Owen Sound.
