A three year old girl from Arthur who was alone in a dinghy was rescued by a kayaker Monday shortly after noon at Sauble Beach.  The girl who was wearing a life jacket was in an inflatable dinghy at the beach with her father and brother.

Her brother was in the water beside the boat when the wind caught the dinghy separating the boy from them, the father jumped in the water to get the boy.  Unfortunately, a stiff wind carried the dinghy even further away making it impossible to get back to it.

The man and his son made it to shore safely leaving the three year old alone drifting from shore.  An Owen Sound resident in a kayak saw what was happening and went out to the child pulling her, in the dinghy, back to shore.  As he approached land, another couple entered the water and brought the child on shore.  A crowd of spectators applauded as the girl was returned to her parents.

Fortunately, the water was calm and the child was wearing a life jacket.

With the recent drownings that have been seen in Ontario waters, proper safety equipment and safety practices can make the difference between a good day at the beach and tragedy.
