Senior Mens’ Club Championship

The Senior Mens’ Club Championship was held on Tuesday and Wednesday last week, with a great turnout of players taking part in this event.  The field was separated into four flights, depending on handicaps, but the race for the overall Champion’s title took place in the A-flight.  Frank Yakabuski was back to defend his title from last year and the year before, but there were others in the field looking to snatch the honour away.

Brian Acton, playing in his first Senior Club Championship event, started the tourney strong with a one over par 73 to take the lead after the first day of play.  Mike Pitzen shot a great round of 75 to keep within 2 shots of Acton, but there were no other A-flight players really in contention after day one.  It looked like a two-man race on the second day of play.

In the B-flight, Lorne Lazenby shot a sizzling 82 on the first day of play, taking an eight-stroke lead into the second day over Steve Green and a ten stroke lead over brother Bill Lazenby.  In the C-flight, Bob Speight shot 92 to take the first day lead, two strokes ahead of Peter Welford and five shots ahead of Barry Robson and Bill Thomson.  In the D-flight, Bill Streeter shot a great first round of 103 to take the lead after eighteen holes but Don White was only two strokes back at 105 and it looked like a fight to the finish in D-flight.

On the second day of play, in the D-flight, White matched his first day score of 105 for a two-day total of 210 and was named the D-flight Champion.  Only one stroke behind with a two day total of 211 was Bill Streeter, who claimed second low gross in the flight.  Zen Rybak won first low net in the flight with a two-day net score of 148, while Dennis Johnston took second low net with a net total of 152.

In the C-flight, on day two, Bill Thomson improved his first day’s score by three strokes for a two-day total of 191.  Thanks to his great round on the second day, Thomson was the C-flight Champion, one stroke ahead of the leader after eighteen holes Bob Speight.  Speight won second low gross in the flight.  Peter Welford won first low net with a two-day net score of 144, followed by Jim Connelly with a net total of 146.

In the B-flight, Lorne Lazenby shot 85 on the second day of play for a two-day total of 167 and a two-day net score of 129.  He was declared the overall Net Champion of the tournament, while Bill Lazenby claimed the B-flight Champion title with a two-day total of 182.  Paul Holk won second low gross with a total score of 184.  Steve Green won first low net in the flight with a two-day net score of 144, followed by Tom Bailey with a net total of 147.

In the Championship flight, Brian Acton birdied the first two holes and took a commanding lead into the back nine on the second day of play.  He shot a 78 on day 2 and was crowned Senior Club Champion for 2010 with a two-day total of 150.  Mike Pitzen, who carded an 82 on the second day of play, was the A-flight Champion with a two-day total of 157, followed by Frank Yakabuski with a two-day total of 160.  Dale Woods was the net winner in the A-flight with a two-day net total of 142, followed by Dan Lazenby with a net total of 151.

Congratulations to Brian Acton, the 2010 Senior Club Champion at Chippewa.

Ladies Club Championship

The Ladies at Chippewa Golf and Country Club held their Club Championship last week, a two-day event that separated the players into two flights.  There was some excellent golf played over the two days with a close battle for the overall Championship title.

In the A-flight, Kay Christie took the lead after day one with a score of 89 but she was only one stroke ahead of Marjorie McCorquodale, who carded a 90.  Doris Pelletier was still in the hunt with a good day one score of 96 while Betty Ross shot 101 and would need a hot second day in order to threaten Christie.

In the B-flight, Waverly Johnston took a sizable lead of 9 strokes after day one with a smooth round of 100.  Roma Rolfe was in second spot with a 109 and it looked like a one-person race.  As it turned out, Johnston shot 102 on the second day of play for a two-day total of 202, and was crowned the B-flight Champion.

In the A-flight on the second day of play, Christie had another great round with a score of 90 and was crowned the overall Ladies Club Champion for 2010.  Doris Pelletier had a super second round of 92, as did McCorquodale with a 94, but neither score was quite enough to catch Christie.  McCorquodale was the overall Net Champion of the tournament.

Couples Invitational

On Saturday, August 29, the annual Couples Invitational tournament was held at Chippewa.  There were entries from several local courses, including the home course, as well as more distant courses, such as Seaforth and Mississauga.   In this event, couples play as a team in a format that changes every six holes.  For the first six holes, they play a best ball format, then the change to an alternate shot game and finally to a team scramble.

At the end of the day, Bob Towner from Petrolia and Marj McCorquodale from Chippewa were the overall winners with a team score of 78.  In second place and winning second low gross with a score of 79 was the team of Bruce and Fran Towner, followed by Len and Wilma Cowan with an 80.

Gary and Diane Bennett from Seaforth won the first low net prize with a net score of 70, followed by Sid and Carolyn Stevens from Mississauga with a net score of 72.  Gus Feeney and Carol McLaughlin fro Seaforth took third low net, also with a net score of 72.

Mens’ Golf News

In the B-flight, Bruce MacGregor shot 41 to win first low gross while Steve Green took first low net with a net 34.  In the C-flight, Don Foell won first low gross with a score of 47, while Charlie Schmalz made it to the prize table with a net 37.

Chippewa Member Shoots His Age

Al Cruickshank has been a member at Chippewa for many years.  He has been trying, for the past few years, to shoot his age, a feat very few golfers manage to accomplish.  It seems that as we grow older, our scores grow higher and for that reason, it is extremely difficult to match your age on the golf course.

Cruickshank has come close several times this year, shooting 88 or 87, but missing the elusive 86 which would represent the number of years he has been on this planet.  On July 29, Al knew he was close to his goal once again as he approached the final few holes of his round. This time, he was determined to finally shoot his age, and keeping a steady hand and a firm mindset, he completed the last several holes in championship form and accomplished his goal by shooting 86.  Congratulations Al.
