Kincardine deputy mayor Laura Haight believes the municipality should state its position regarding off-shore wind turbines, and she is concerned about beach safety after an exchange student from France drowned at Station Beach last month.

Haight brought these issues forward from the consent agenda during the council meeting Sept. 1.

In committee-of-the-whole, she referenced the letter from Geoff Peach at the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation which states its position about turbines in Lake Huron.

"I think we should draw up a resolution stating our position and submit it to the province," said Haight. "Are we supportive? I'm doubtful we are."

From a tourism standpoint, the glorious sunsets off the shores of Lake Huron are an icon for Kincardine, said Haight.

"If these turbines interfere with that, they would prove detrimental to tourism," she said. "I think we should endorse a general motion that these off-shore turbines require more consultation."

Councillor Guy Anderson agreed with Haight and said he was considering a notice of motion regarding the off-shore turbines. "Could we have some discussion about this next week?" he asked.

Council agreed to discuss it during the corporate services committee meeting on Sept. 8.

As for Haight's concern regarding beach safety, she pointed to three letters received by the municipality, urging more precautions be put in place, such as lifeguards and coloured flags - a red flag would mean swimming is dangerous because of a possible undertow.

"I have also received E-mails about that," said councillor Kenneth Craig. "What can we do to make it safer? We should have a look at it."

The recommendation was to refer it to the recreational services committee for review.

In other news, council agreed to amend its consolidated fee bylaw to add the appropriate Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) to all fees, and to add some recently-instituted recreation fees.
