Kincardine council and the Davidson Centre revitalization committee were all smiles for the ground-breaking ceremony in July but now there are problems with the east foundation of the arena and a new design has been drawn up

The new gymnasium project has barely begun and already there are problems.

In committee-of-the-whole last night (Sept. 1), Kincardine council was to deal with a report from the architect, Strasman Architects of Toronto, regarding structural deficiencies in the load-bearing capacity of the east foundation of the arena, and the status of the contingency fund.

However, that discussion was deferred to next week's planning and corporate services meeting (Sept. 8).

Chief administrative officer John deRosenroll said the structural engineer excavated and measured the foundation support of the east wall and has determined that it does not have the load-bearing capacity to support the new building.

The structural engineer and the architect have drawn up a new design for the load-bearing capacity and a new price tag, said deRosenroll, which will be in council's agenda packages by Friday or Monday for discussion at Wednesday's meeting.

"It's a major change order for the project so it has to come before council," he said.
