He wasn't the cream in her coffee, but he certainly caught her attention. Owen and Doris Richards met in a restaurant in Victoria, B.C., more than 65 years ago. "She was working there behind the counter," recalls Owen. "When she went out to the back, she left her coffee on the counter and I put salt in it." "When I tasted it, I felt like throwing it at him," says Doris. Instead, they dated and then travelled to England to get married. Owen was in the Armed Forces and had to return to his base in England. Doris joined him there but they couldn't get married until she had lived in the country for awhile. Relaxing at Malcolm Place, Kincardine, Friday afternoon, the happy couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, surrounded by other residents, friends and family. They certainly epitomize the saying that a couple that plays together, stays together, says their son, Ray. They travelled all over the country in a tent and later a house trailer, taking their two sons with them. Owen and Doris lived in Richmond Hill for many years before moving to Oliphant where they lived for 10 years. They have been in Kincardine for 10 years, the past three at Malcolm Place.

Their son, Ray and his wife, Genevieve, live in Kincardine, while their other son, Dennis, lives in England.
Owen and Doris have two grandchildren, Troy of Indianapolis, and Emily of London; and three great-grandchildren. So, how do you stay married for 65 years? "You have to behave naturally all the time," says Doris. "He wouldn't hold my hand in public, but when I take his hand, then he'll hold hands." The highlight of their years together has been sharing them with their family.
