Saugeen Shores Town Council member Victoria Serda announced her candidacy for Mayor of the Town of Saugeen Shores  today.

Serda has been serving the Town as Councilor elected  in the Port Elgin ward since 2006 and is also currently President of the Saugeen Sustainability Volunteer and Resource Centre, with offices in downtown Port Elgin.

Along with her husband Jamie and daughter Corrina, Victoria’s dedication to the Saugeen Shores’community is deep rooted going back to the 1850s and her great grandparents, who were instrumental in the town’s early settlement.

Serda has served on council for the past four years and feels she can better serve her community even better as Mayor, building on the great support she has received from the people in Saugeen Shores.

Present Positions:

Founder at Saugeen Sustainability Centre SSC is a resource centre for people interested in making their lifestyles, events, homes, businesses and/or institutions more green and economical in a culturally and socially responsible manner.

Ontario Mentor-Canada at The Climate Project Volunteer organizer of the Montreal training of 250 presenters in 2008. Served as Lead Canadian mentor to Al Gore trainees to support their Inconvenient Truth presentations. Travelled to Nashville in June 2010 for Solutions training with Mr. Gore. Now, an Ontario Mentor for about 40 presenters, and chauffeur for Corrina, who is asked to speak more often than me! (No wonder, since at age 14 she's spoken to 35,000 in around 150 presentations) :-)

Executive Director at ClimateSphere ClimateSphere is a National not-for-profit climate change organization, with an immediate goal of organizing a climate change action conference from Oct 13-16 in Brampton ON, and also being a hub of information on the internet for climate change

Serda says one of her goals is to institute an open door policy.  "I firmly believe in open communication and getting the public more involved in the decision making process.  I decided I wanted to be more of a voice for the people."  

As part of her community involvement, Serda has served on several committees including the new Rotary Integrated Accessibility Playground,  Accessibility Transportation Committee and also was one of the organizers of the newly developed Community Gardens in Southampton.

Serda has a campaign committee in place, including, a chairman, Jack McQuarrie, who has been involved in both municipal and provincial elections as well as acting as a consultant at the Federal level.

"I am going to conduct an old-fashioned, back to the people campaign with a lot of door-knocking and talking to residents.  I'm looking forward to talking with people and finding out what their concerns are."
