Harbour of Refuge

Island Dock Range Light

One of the long standing traditions of the Propeller Club 'meetings' in Southampton has been revived.  Members are bringing items and pictures of the past history of the Marine Heritage of the area to meetings.

The Propeller Club meets every Wednesday at 4 pm at the Walker House and all visitors are welcome.

Today, September 22, 2010 featured photographic treasures brought by Diane Huber of Southampton and Jack Chapman of Port Elgin.

Diane's picture shows a rare view of the Harbour of Refuge taken on the Island Dock that came out in a long curve from the north end of Chantry Island. (see large photo above)   As part of the Harbour of Refuge there was the famous, but dangerous gap which allowed ships to enter and seek safety from the wrath of Lake Huron on the lee side of the Island

In the background is the shoreline of Southampton.  The Lighthouse at the gap was to be lined up with the McNab Point Lighthouse  Pictures of the Gap or Island Lighthouse are rare.

In other news at the Propeller Club Meeting chaired by Paul Kelly:

  • Jack Chapman brought rare photos of the famous tug Douglas M owned by Brock Macauley.  He also showed a fine picture of a Bowman tug.

  • Ken Cassavoy, Marine Archeologist, spoke about plans for a  major exhibit at the Bruce County Museum of the HMS General Hunter in 2012.  Planning is moving ahead and prospects are excellent for an in depth look at the War of 1812 and the Hunter.
