The protest continues against Bruce Power's plan to ship 16 100-tonne, decommissioned steam generators to Sweden for recycling. Last week, a petition signed by 200 people was presented to Owen Sound council. Petitioners from the United States and Europe don't want to see the radioactive generators travel through the streets to the harbour. Blue Mountains mayor Mary Ellen Anderson says there are a number of groups in her area that have concerns about the generators travelling through the Great Lakes and that protests are possible if the plan progresses. Bruce Power's John Peevers encourages everyone who has a concern to attend the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) hearings on the plan. “The CNSC has decided to have this hearing on Sept. 29 to address questions and concerns like this,” he says. “We encourage people to look to that hearing as a place where they can get factual and science-based information. People are always going to be opposed to nuclear. There are those we can never convince that nuclear is safe. If people want the facts, the hearing is designed to present that sort of information.” Anyone can attend, says Peevers, but the deadline for intervener status has passed. The hearing will be held in Ottawa and will be webcast on the Internet.

“There's a lot of misinformation
flying around from a lot of sources,” says Peevers. “People don't
spend a lot of time thinking about nuclear and their level of
knowledge about radiation isn't high so when people read something,
it ramps up their fears. That's what disappoints us in most cases.”
As for the requirement of permits to take the steam generators through the City of Owen Sound, Peevers says Bruce Power has not applied for those yet. “You don't apply for those until 30 days before the shipping date,” he says. “As far as information from the city, heavy haul permits are based on the impact on the roads. We've done an assessment and there will be no impact. It's not something they (city) could deny based on our application.”
