Despite a minor setback in the construction of the new gymnasium addition at the Davidson Centre, the fund-raising arm of the revitalization committee continues its efforts to bring in donations for the structure.

Fund-raising chairman Derrick Burrows was at Kincardine council Wednesday night (Sept. 8) to explain the efforts to date.

He said the goal was to raise $750,000. As of the end of May, a total of $351,330 had been raised. As of Sept. 8, the total was $426,272.75, including $255,472.75 collected and $171,000 in committed letters.

"We're now targeting the public and small businesses to raise another $150,000 to $200,000," said Burrows.

The revitalization committee is also holding fund-raising events to help bring in another $50,000, he said. These include a skate-a-thon sponsored by Home Hardware on Oct. 2; a golf tournament in May, 2011; beach dances in July of 2011 and 2012; and a celebrity hockey game in August, 2011.

"We will be collecting money for this project past the March, 2011, completion date," Burrows said.

The fund-raising efforts will help cover the project shortfall of $450,275 (as of May, 2010) which is now slated to come from the recreation reserve fund ($356,000) and the Kincardine capital reserve fund ($94,275).

The municipality is also on the hook for additional costs of $220,000 to shore up the east wall foundation and to build up the contingency fund.

"Thanks to the committee for its hard work," said deputy mayor Laura Haight. "It's a difficult task to pursue donations and organize fund-raisers. I expect this new facility will be used by many in the Kincardine area."
