About a dozen people took the time to gather round the septic tank at the Pine River United Church Saturday morning (Sept. 18) during a septic social put on by B.M. Ross and Associates and the Grey Bruce Health Unit. The purpose is to show the public what a septic inspection is, the process and the benefits, so township residents with septic systems are more apt to get the inspection done. "We had a lot more farmers out to this one," said Lisa Courtney of B.M. Ross. Previous socials were held at the home of councillor Jim Hanna in the former Kinloss Township, and at the home of mayor Mitch Twolan in the former Huron Township.Courtney said septic inspections continue through to November or December depending on the weather. "We have 30 booked for September and a few for October and November of this year," she said. "We've done 385 this season, which is the most we've done in one year. We hope to reach 400 this year. A key component for any septic system is an effluent filter which stops solids from reaching the septic bed. Any systems installed after 2005 will have such a filter; the others should have one installed. That filter also has to be kept clean, so it should be removed and cleaned every spring.

A septic inspection takes about a half-hour, and the
property owners should be present during the inspection, have the tank
exposed and ready to check.
Education is the key, say inspectors. They want the owners there to go through the process with them. Despite the smell and look of a septic system, people should realize it's a natural process. Eventually everything goes into the environment and hits the water table. People should be aware of what they're putting into their septic systems. Huron-Kinloss has about 2,800 septic systems and just over 1,000 have been tested. The cost for the septic re-inspection program is $55/year on the tax bill of every ratepayer who has a septic system.
