Mens Closing Tournament

Sadly, the season for the Mens’ section at Chippewa Golf and Country Club has ended.  The final tournament of the year was held on Saturday, Sept 25, with a good turnout of members for this four-man scramble event.

Three teams started the day with birdies on the first hole, teams captained by Gerry Call, Rick Grolway and Mike Pitzen.  The Bruce Towner team picked up a birdie on the second hole, while team Grolway birdied the fourth, sixth and eighth holes for a front nine total of 31, and the lead after nine holes.  The Harold Agla team was only one stroke back with a 32 with several other teams in at 33.

On the back nine, birdies were hard to come by for most teams, with the exception of Team Grolway.  The Grolway group picked up four more birdies on the back nine to finish with an eight under par, 64, at least three strokes ahead of the rest of the competition.  Congratulations to Rick Grolway, Mike Cleary, Bill Lazenby and Bill Streeter.

Five teams were tied for second place with scores of 67, and John Schmidt, our golf professional at Chippewa, had to use the rules of retrogression to place the teams in the proper order.  In second place was the team captained by Harold Agla with Ron Caudle, Larry Curtis and David Porcellato.  In third spot was the team captained by Gerry Call with Barry Beatty and Bill Berry.  The Mike Pitzen team of Phil Hunt and Charlie Schmalz were fourth, followed by the team captained by Freeman Coblenz with Peter Quigley, Kent Bergstrom and Don Foell.

The following were the winners of the Closest to the Pin competitions;  Dan Lazenby on #3; Phil Hunt on #5, Ron Caudle on #9 and on #18.  On #13, players who hit the green with their drive were entered into a draw won by Gerry Call, while those who missed the green, a much larger number of players, were entered into another draw, won by Pete Quigley.  George Matheson sunk the Longest Putt on the second hole while Russ Solomway won the same contest on #15.

Senior Mens’ Closing Tournament

The Seniors at Chippewa closed their season on Tuesday, Sept 28, and the weather was plain awful.  Although we started off in dry conditions, the rain started to fall after three holes, and it got worse as the day went on.  Several groups packed it in before finishing the eighteen holes, but there were several hardy teams who actually finished the full round.  One of our members from Kentucky jokingly made the comment that we were all a bunch of crazy Canucks, and no one could disagree with him, except to remind him that he was out there in the rain with the rest of us.

Only two teams managed to break par in these conditions.  In first place, with a four under par 68, was the team captained by Terry Bailey with Jan Riddall and Don Foell.  In second spot, with a one under par 71, was the team captained by Lorne Lazenby with Don Hill, Jim Connelly and Don White.

Dale Woods and his team of John McCormack, Peter Welford and Dennis Johnston were third with an even par 72.  Two teams scored 77 and tied for fourth place.  Dan Lazenby and his team of Bob Speight, Bert Tripp and Terry Morgan shared fourth prize with the team captained by Paul Holk with Bill Thomson, John Upper and bill Richards.

Rounding out the prizes were the teams captained by Mike Pitzen with Al Cruickshank and Doug Oatman and the team captained by Mike Cleary with Tom Bailey, Watt Rodgers and George Matheson.

The winners of the Closest to the Pin contests were as follows:  Terry Bailey on #3, Dan Lazenby on #5 and Don White on #13.  Winners of the Longest Putt competitions were John McCormack on #2 and Dan Lazenby on #15.
