Huron-Kinloss has told the owners of the seven cottages in Poplar Beach, west of Boiler Beach Road, to vacate their properties. But they are refusing to leave. Council made the decision two years ago not to renew the leases on the cottages, allowing them to expire Sept. 25. That date has passed and the cottage owners say they are not going. At the township's general committee meeting last night (Oct. 4), council was told that the Notices to Terminate these tenancies were sent to all cottage owners. The tenants have indicated, through their solicitor, that they do not intend to provide the township with vacant possession. Given their failure to abide by those terms, the township will be making an application to the Landlord and Tenant Board for an order confirming the Notices to Terminate. This is the standard legal process in cases where tenants who have been given a Notice of Termination refuse to vacate a rented property, said staff in a report to council. The township also indicated in the termination notices that it intends to demolish the buildings and use the lands for non-residential purposes. Staff has applied for the required demolition permits.
