The mood at the Lakeshore Recreation Centre in Port Elgin was, for the most part, celebratory as early election results came in. Re-elected incumbent Mayor Mike Smith said that he feels somewhat relieved now that it's over for another four years. Smith said he's looking forward to getting the council on track again. "I'm looking forward to working with all the excellent candidates, returning ones and new ones. One of our first orders of the day will be the budget and, of course, the Official Plan." He also added that he wants to work more closely with the First Nations. "The Town worked closely with the First Nations on the sewer expansion project and I would like to see our relations with both Chiefs Kahgee and Ackewenzie continue to develop." Smith defeated challenger, Victoria Serda, 4,790 to 1,273 (unofficial).
