Doors Open Kincardine drew 4,500 people to view the inside of numerous historical homes and sites, including cemeteries and churches, on Oct. 16-17. Chairperson Jane Rigby said the number of visitors is up from last year and about 75 per cent were from outside the Municipality of Kincardine. Mainly, they came from London, Ontario; the United Kingdom;, Florida, Ohio, Georgia and Michigan. New to Doors Open this year were the three cemeteries in the municipality: Kincardine, Tiverton and Port Bruce."The cemeteries were a bit of a disappointment," said Rigby. "Not too many people visited them. Only those who were looking for ancestors. I think perhaps that a number of visitors were missed in all of them because the tour guides couldn't catch all the visitors. When you're at the far end, it's hard to catch those who have just arrived!" She said the Tiverton Cemetery was of interest to those who may have been intrigued by the connection to two prime ministers - John Diefenbaker and Joe Clark - whose parents are buried there. Rigby said among the 29 sites this year were several that had returned after a hiatus from Doors Open. These were well-attended, such as the A.J. Evans House on Princes Street in Kincardine, and the George Conley house on Huron Terrace in Kincardine. "The modern condominium on Princes Street, Kincardine brought a lot of visits," she said. "And we were happy with the numbers at the Inverlyn Lake Estates home on Carloway Trail in Kincardine." She said everyone was pleased with the event. "The weather was wonderful. The visitors were happy, and the site hosts and attendant volunteers enjoyed themselves too. It was a great success."
