The sixth annual Thousands of Nativities display will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Walkerton from Nov. 12-21. This peaceful, breathtakingly-beautiful exhibit is the largest and most exquisite of its kind in the world. Visitors come from all over the globe to see it. Hundreds and hundreds of people, including children and youth, are participating in this year's tour, and more than 165 churches of all denominations have been invited to loan nativities for this wonderful display. Families, friends, neighbours, communities and collectors from far and wide are sharing their nativities. Original nativity ornaments created by children and youth from several elementary and secondary schools, will be featured. Organizers say the ever-increasing variety is astounding and unmatched. With new additions in new settings, the display has grown to more than 3,000 nativities in all sizes - micro-micro-miniature to larger than life, made from materials ranging from sea glass to salt glaze, beeswax to bone, straw to silver, walnuts to wool, origami to onyx, toothpicks to tapestries, coconuts to crystal, popsicle sticks to pewter, ceramic to olive wood, soapstone to glass, leather to ivory, gingerbread to gourds, beads to barn board, etc.Among the many new international nativities from more than 60 various cultures and ethnic diversities, will be a metal sculpture from the Philippines and fabric figures from Japan. Information cards provide stories, histories and unique personal glimpses of some nativities, including those more than 100 years old. Professional designers, carpenters, electricians and many volunteers with a cross-section of skills, transform the rooms, ceilings, and halls to enhance this world of nativities. Together with everyone sharing their nativities, it is an extensive, collaborative effort bridging all our communities. Everyone is welcome, and admission is free. There will be soft carols playing and a little Christmas fragrance in the air. Families always enjoy it. Visitors can take their time as they quietly walk through. There are no formal tours or tour guides.
