Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) in Port Elgin took a different tact when it came to Remembrance Day 2010 as the students placed 700 hand-made Doves of Peace on the front lawn of the school.

Stephanie Cameron and math teacher, Kate Hamer, came up with the idea of the doves and presented it to Student Council, who quickly endorsed the concept.  Hamer's class hand-created each Dove and then each student in the entire school was asked to write a message of peace or remembrance of someone on his/her dove.  The doves were then implanted in front of the school after the Remembrance Day Ceremony.

In addition to the symbolic release of doves and messages, special guest speaker, former Royal Canadian Dragoon Sargeant, Joe Nunez spoke at the special Remembrance Day assembly.

Nunez, with a 25 year career in the military that included peacekeeping Cypress, tours in Germany and training troops in Meaford, Ontario, explained to the high school students the lessons that he had learned in the military.  "I learned everything from how to shine my shoes to discipline to working as a team and developing leadership skills," said Nunez.

Today, Nunez works with Bruce Nuclear Power security at the Bruce Power site in Bruce County.  When asked what he thought of the decision to keep troops in Afghanistan past the 2011 deadline, Nunez explained that the troops feel they are doing the right thing.  "I think that if the troops were pulled out completely, they would feel disappointed and that they had not completed their job of helping the Afghan people."
