Kincardine's public works committee will have to grapple with a speed limit concern in Tiverton.

That was the decision made in committee-of-the-whole last night (Nov. 10).

Bob Wilson, chairman of the police services board, told council that the board wants the speed limit dropped to 50 km/h from 60 km/h at the east side of Tiverton on Highway 21.

The police services board was unanimous in its support for this proposal, said Wilson, and it also has the support of the Tiverton and District Ratepayers' Association.

The recommendation to council is to have the speed limit reduced to 50 km/h from 60 km/h, along Highway 21, from Memorial Park Drive East to 126 Main Street East in Tiverton.

Wilson said there are three reasons for reducing the speed limit:

  • In the fall and spring, children going to the Tiverton Sports Centre walk along the shoulders of Highway 21
  • The average speed along that stretch of road has been clocked at 76 km/h
  • A safe exit must be provided for fire trucks leaving the Tiverton Fire Hall

The police services board also wants council to converse with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO), regarding new signage at MacLaren Drive in Tiverton, to read "Fire Truck Entrance and Turning."

Councillor Kenneth Craig suggested this would be better handled by the South Bruce OPP. "Why are we taking responsibility for this?" he asked.

"The police are in favour of this (recommendation)," said Wilson. "They've stepped up patrols and written some tickets in that area, but it has had no effect."

Chief administrative officer John deRosenroll suggested the public works manager do a report on the rules and regulations for a controlled access highway and what's required under safety regulations.

Council agreed to send the recommendation from the police services board to the public works committee, with a report back to council in December.
