After 27 years serving as a municipal councillor, Ron Hewitt is retiring.

At the final meeting of the current Kincardine council last night (Nov. 17), he put a hat with hair over his bald head, noting that he had lots of hair when he began his career on municipal council.

He was first elected in November, 1980. His daughters were ages six and four. Now, he and his wife, Janice, have four granddaughters, ages four, three, two and seven months.

"I'm looking forward to spending more time with my family," he said. "I'm the fifth generation of Hewitts to live in this municipality, and I've been honoured to help shape the municipality in which I live.

"It's been an honour and a privilege to serve with all of you. It's not always been pretty, but we got several things accomplished."

Hewitt served on the former Kincardine Township council before being elected to the new Municipality of Kincardine council, following amalgamation.

He noted that during his time as a municipal councillor, he was elected nine times, attended about 2,500 meetings, served on just about every committee in existence, and worked with three reeves and four mayors, and about 25 different councillors.

"I'm proud of the numerous projects that have been completed during that time," he said.

Among those projects are new bridges, 200 kilometres of roads paved, several new buildings including the medical clinic, the Tiverton Arena and two firehalls, many additions, new parks, streetscapes, the lakefront water pipeline to the north, and purchasing the new municipal administrative centre.

He thanked the ratepayers who supported him at election time, the municipal staff, councils past and present, and his family, particularly his wife, for their support and encouragement.
