If you had anywhere to be yesterday (Dec. 13) in the Kincardine area, the event or appointment was likely cancelled. A severe snowstorm blew in Sunday night and effectively shut down everything by Monday morning. High wind and heavy snow caused closed roads, effectively closing schools and cancelling many events and appointments as people either stayed home or spent hours clearing their driveways. Downtown Kincardine was still doing a booming business for those merchants who were able to open their doors. By early Monday morning, the South Bruce OPP had closed Highway 21 from Port Elgin to Amberley, Highway 9 from Kincardine to Bruce County Road 20, Bruce County Road 20 from Highway 21 to Bruce County Road 1, and Bruce County Road 23 (B-line) from Lorne Beach Road to Bruce County Road 15.High wind and blowing snow had reduced visibility on area roads, said police, recommending that motorists stay off the roads until the snowsqualls pass, in the interest of public safety. Snowplows were pulled from the county roads, causing the buses to the Bruce Nuclear plant to be cancelled. By noon Monday, police had also closed Bruce County Road 6 (at Pine River) from Highway 21 to Bruce County Road 7 (Ripley Road), and Bruce County Road 86 from Highway 21 to Bruce County Road 7. And by Monday afternoon, Bruce County Road 20 was closed from Bruce County Road 33 to County Road 1. The major cause for road closures continued to be high wind, blowing and drifting snow, and poor-to-nil visibility. In fact, drifting snow had reduced Highway 21 to one lane in spots north of Kincardine. For up-to-date road/weather information, visit: http://www.brucecounty.on.ca/road_conditions.php or call Bruce County Roads at 1-866-266-7569, Option 2. The stormy weather is expected to continue through tonight and tomorrow, and possibly to Wednesday (Dec. 15). The Huron-Kinloss council inaugural meeting, slated for Monday night, was cancelled for a second time, and will be re-scheduled. With all the cancellations, Francesca Dobbyn, executive director of the United Way of Bruce-Grey reminds the public that the 211 information line is still up and running - live answer 24/7. If people require support or information and don't know where to turn, call 211. The information line is live in Bruce, Grey, Simcoe, Huron and Perth counties.
