In a contest that had a distinctive playoff feel, the

Winterhawks played an intense and aggressive game but came up just short against the defending champion Elora Rocks in WOAA Senior Hockey action Friday night in Saugeen Shores.

Ryan Dudgeon who lined up with Darryl McKinnon and Brent MacDermid got the 'Hawks on the board early in the first with his sixth of the season energizing the full house on hand to watch the first and second place teams go toe-to-toe.

Teams were hard-hitting

There was plenty of bad blood evident as the two teams dealt out some big hits and lots of post whistle extra-curriculars but it was Elora who came out on top as they edged two points closer to the first place Winterhawks.

The Rocks had been riding a winning streak of more than 30 games but were handed four losses by the league for using an ineligible player.

Elora evened the score in the first and the two teams traded chances throughout the second with both goalies making some sensational saves. Jeremy Beaty made some stellar stops for the 'Hawks but Elora struck twice in the dying minutes of the second period including a power play marker to put the game out of the reach.

The 'Hawks continued to battle, particularly the line of Curtis Johnston, Jordan Lang and Blake Underwood, but were unable to beat the Elora netminder.

The 'Hawks next game is Tuesday, Dec. 28 when the Ripley Wolves come to town.
