Saugeen Shores Councilor Fred Shildroth announced changes to the blue box recycling program at the recent Town Council meeting.

"We are now going to have many more items included in the blue box program," said Shildroth.  "Unfortunately, the Blue Box pick-up schedule was printed in August and the new additions did not come through until November.  We are  however, trying to get the word out about the new items."

Among the items that are going to now be allowed for pick-up include ... tin foil and trays, rigid plastic packaging that is specifically marked on the bottom, single service plastic cups such as those used for yogurt, clam shell containers (such as those used for fresh berries), plastic pails under 20L with no metal handles (e.g. cat litter pails) and plastic inserts such as those used in cookie packaging.

The new program has also meant retro-fits to the fleet of approximately 14 recycling trucks at a cost of $1,000 per vehicle.

According to Shildroth however, government funding is significant because "... the Blue Box program in  the Bruce Area Recycling is one of the few that practices sorting at the curb so that our costs are low."

The plastics will be recycled for the auto industry and, although the program is a pilot project, it is expected to divert considerable waste from the local landfill site.
